FMA Informative Issue16 - Modified Pangamut System
FMA Informative Issue16

Welcome to the South Bay Filipino Martial Arts Club Page. We are a Filipino American Barangay (Village) Located is the (Little Hawaii) North Torrance-South Gardena area. We organized to share the Filipino Fighting Arts and Culture with residents of the South Bay community. Our purpose is to ensure that the Filipino American Communities of South Bay of Southern California does not forget its heritage of the traditional fighting arts of the Philippines. If you are Filipino, Filipino-American, Filipino-Hawaiian, Filipino by Marriage, or if you just love all things Filipino you will find our village/club quite welcoming.

The Filipino Fighting Arts known as Kalis, Eskrima or Arnis, used a variety of weapons including sticks, knives, Bolos and hand to hand fighting was developed over a period of many centuries in the Philippines as her people fought for their independence from foreign invaders. Each skirmish with a new culture added to the Filipino Martial Arts as warriors developed techniques to combat foreign styles. Subsequently, more than 100 different Filipino Martial Arts styles developed, which can be grouped into three complete self-defense systems which utilize sticks, swords, empty hands and other weapons.

Our system is a Filipino-American system called the Modified Pangamut System which means Modified or Modernized Skilled Hands. It has the same meaning as the Chinese meaning with Kung Fu that is to be skilled with your hands. We have eight basic levels of training. The system is composed of eight separate fighting methods that use Arnis de Mano as it fighting platform, these methods are Largo Baston ( Long Stick Fighting Method), Barrow (Spear), Baston (Stick), Double Baston (Double Stick), Daga (Knives), Pana (Bow) and Cadena de Mano (Empty Hands). We also train with fire arms, other modern weapons and we do internal healing work and work with pressure points.

This system was established by Mataw Guro Marc Lawrence based upon what he had learned in his travels and training with other Masters and as a fighter. In his travels and fighting other systems he developed the Modified Pangamut System. This is what he teaches and fights with, Marc Lawrence is our Punong Guro (Head Instructor) and he is also National Champion in the Filipino Martial Arts and an International Champion in Kempo Karate. Punong Guro Marc Lawrence received FMAdigest Competitor of the Year award is 2009. Our club is active in competitions to apply our knowledge. Our Club placed first for the most gold medals in the USFMAF-Eskrimador’s Open World Tournament in the summer of 2009. Mataw Guro Marc Lawrence and Guro Matthew Lawrence took first place in the Kempo Karate divisions for self-defense and in mixed weapons sparring with Kick and Punch at the 2015 Long Beach International.
